We energize, educate, and empower Tween youth via sports and recreation, educational outings, performing arts, academic support – including high school preparation and transitioning – community service and summer employment. Urban Dove offers the following programs for our middle school students:
Urban Dove Junior All-Stars After School Program
With a focus on the social and emotional changes that occur between elementary and middle school - Urban Dove’s year round Junior All-Stars Program is a progression of services following the UD-Elementary HiRisers program. At the middle school level, we elevate the programming to reflect our kids’ developmental transitions and increased responsibility. Also known as UD’s Youth-Staff-in-Training, Junior All-Stars (JAS) learn to navigate relationships, handle peer pressure and become decision-makers with community service projects and club activity choices. Other JAS activities include high school application research and prep, summer employment opportunities, visiting guest speakers from various fields, a team-building day retreat and an end-of-year trip – all in support of a seamless transition from middle school to high school, while building the foundation for the college selection process.
Urban Dove Summer Day Camp
Urban Dove operates a 6-week, full day summer camp where the Junior All-Stars (UD’s Youth-Staff-in-Training), assist the UD Youth Staff, who serve as camp counselors, in leading our younger campers in all their activities of sports and recreation, including weekly swimming, field trips, and academic enrichment projects to curb summer learning loss. Youth-Staff-in-Training in 6th and 7th grade get an early jump on learning to be future camp counselors. Like our high school Youth Staff, 8th grade Youth-Staff-in-Training get paid!
Urban Dove Sleep Away Camp (Camp Watitoh)
Nearing the end of our summer day camp, our Junior All-Stars’ Youth-Staff-in-Training get a chance to mentor and assist our younger students for a week of sleep away camp! Serving as role models, they help the younger students – many away from home for the first time – build independence and responsibility, overcome fear by building confidence and self-esteem, and enjoy the great outdoors and the experience of a lifetime! And, they are getting this same kind of focused attention and mentoring from high school Youth Staff. Urban Dove is full circle youth mentoring!
Summer jobs will be made available to qualifying 14-year-olds in the Junior All-Stars Program (as outlined by New York City funded Summer Youth Employment Program through the Department of Youth and Community Development). Junior All-Stars get an early start contributing to the work force, learning to appreciate putting in an honest day’s work and getting paid for it!
